WBA Free Agency Preview
The end of the season is drawing closer and closer and we all know what that means. The beloved rituals of the WBA Draft and Free Agency period take place. Through a series of articles I'll profile the top talent that might be out there when it comes time to make your teams acquisitions. Today's installment will be about Point Guards. My profiles will be in ABC order and I will do my Top 10 players available at that position.
Drake Bacheman. Despite being 31 years of age Drake is still a potential starter for a team in desperate need of a point guard, but most likely he will end up as a very talented backup on someone's roster. He's a pure passer that always looks to involve his teammates. He won't add much to your scoring average himself, but he plays great defense and doesn't turn the ball over which helps a team win games. He's also smart with his body which means he's able to stick around. Just a great guy to have on the floor.
Leon Berthelson. Berthelson had a ton of promise early in his career, but he has just never really blossomed into the kind of player that many thought he would become. Now, at age 31, he will probably be a second option for some team. He's another guy that really focuses on getting his teammates involved. His best asset is his defense. He gets into peoples faces pretty well for a point guard and he's a master at knocking the ball loose. That leads directly to points on the other end of the court. He's also excellent at taking care of the ball and is a good influence on his teammates.
Javonte Bolk. At just 24 years of age I think that Bolk will be a highly sought after free agent this off season if Rochester doesn't get him resigned. Bolk is a great passer that doesn't turn the ball over. He's a smart player that seems to know when to take the shot and when to get the ball to a hot shooting teammate. He needs to develop his own shooting skills in the paint a little bit, but with his deadly three point ability and his court vision he might be one of the best young point guards in the entire league. His defense is only average right now, but he will produce a few steals through the course of a game.
Reid Dall. Dall is an intriguing prospect at the point also. He is a great passer and a solid team leader. He's a pass first, pass second, shoot tenth kind of guy. I doubt that Gabon will pay him enough to keep him away from free agency, but he would make any team a fine starting point guard. His defense is great as he will hound opponents into giving up the ball. Perhaps the best part of the whole thing is his mental game. He rarely turns the ball over and doesn't commit fouls which make him a great asset. If your team can score at other posts this kid would be well worth a look.
Oliver Doherty. Doherty is a unique type of point guard. He's one of the few that redefine a position. He has the potential to be a huge scorer in this league as he gets to the line a lot and can also knock it down from anywhere on the court. The biggest issue with him is he doesn't like to pass the ball like a pure point man. His defense is solid though as he will really get under the skin of opposing players. One thing that goes along with his big time offensive game is that he loves to drive the lane which leads to a higher than normal turnover count for a point guard. But if you want scoring out of your one spot then he's your man.
John Gaiser. Gaiser is another player that has never really reached the potential many thought he would. He is still one of the best passers that this league has ever seen when he is on his game, but his shooting ability and lack of concentration at times has led to him being labeled as a career sub. With the proper attention a few years back this could possibly have been avoided, but I think it is probably too late now. He has some turnover problems and will get into foul trouble also. He will make a nice sub for someone, but I wouldn't let him play many minutes.
Omar Jefferson. I have heard that he will be extended by Brooklyn which wouldn't surprise me. I think he is pretty much the player that makes the team go. He's an amazing scorer that can shoot from anywhere on the court . While he does look to shoot as much as he can he is a smart player and knows how to find open teammates after the defense is drawn to him. He's a premier passer and his defense is really coming into its' own. At age 25 I think he would be possibly the top free agent in this years group if he doesn't get an extension.
Felipe Juarez. Juarez is another offensive minded point guard. He is a solid scorer who loves to challenge any big man in the paint. He is also capable of faking a drive and pulling up for the deep shot. This flexibility is what makes him dangerous. He isn't a very productive passer as a point guard though which leads some to believe he is more of a shooting guard type. This is even further perpetuated when you look at his defensive stats which show that he is a very casual defender. He also suffers some mental lapses and will pick up dumb fouls and commit some turnovers. If he plays a good calm game he is a deadly weapon, but can he do that consistently?
Vincent Robinson. Robinson starts to fall back into more of a pure point guard type of mold. He doesn't look to shoot very much and you wouldn't want to trust him to hit a game winner although he can hit the occasional 3 pointer. He is best suited as a passer where he excels. He can put out some highlight reel dishes and almost never turns it over. His defense is also a selling point as he wreaks havoc on opposing players with lockdown ability and great body control.
Jimmy Whalen. Whalen has all the tools to be a star in the WBA, but he just hasn't put together all the tools he has for a complete season yet. He is a great passer and plays a decent game offensively. His shooting is solid for a guard and he can score some points too. His defense is pretty good and he will get some steals. His biggest detractor is his lack of focus as he will commit some turnovers at times and will also pick up some fouls.

Jalen Bell: Remembering Chuck Murphy
The patch with number 41 rested on the shoulder of his Seoul uniform, like a
policeman's badge. Officials and league representatives spoke with general
manager Tony Swagger and head coach Bill Cash for almost ten minutes, as the
start of the game against Toronto was delayed for the sake of Jalen Bell and
the memory of a teammate.
"When Chuck died," Bell said in a post game news conference, "people seemed
to overlook him. Felt like a really horrible thing to do to a man who was
part of a world champion team just the season before, and when I was traded
here, I met with Tony to ask if I could do something in Chuck's memory."
Chuck Murphy, a reserve center for the Salt Lake City Fanatics, died in a
car accident on February 27, 2006, en route to catch a flight for the
following night's game in Toronto. Murphy, who had been seeing a back
specialist in Salt Lake City, had yet to play this season due to a severe
muscle strain, had not been placed on injured reserve as he said he would be
there if he was needed.
Given Salt Lake's record and their success this season, he wasn't needed in
the lineup. After meeting with a back specialist while the team was hosted
by Seoul, his car slipped on a patch of ice and crossed lanes. He was
broadsided by an empty passenger bus and driven off the road. Murphy died
that night.
"Chuck and I were roomates," Bell said. "So maybe I knew him better than the
rest of the roster did. It just seemed like he deserved to be remembered
with more than just a minute of silence before the next home game. So I when
I got here, and Bill and Tony were waiting to meet me at the airport, I had
a request to make of them."
Chuck Murphy's contract had been included in the trade, and Seoul had
already agreed to pay the remainder of this season's salary to Murphy's
widow. Jalen's request, however, was for the right to wear a patch on his
uniform with #41, Chuck Murphy's number, for the rest of the season.
"Swagger and his team went to work, contacting the commissioner's office and
cutting through all the red tape about uniform rules and so on. I couldn't
ask the other players to wear these patches, they hadn't known Chuck or
played against him this season. It was something I had to do myself."
Dispensation came through from the commissioner's office minutes before the
game was to begin, one of the perils of making a request from the other side
of the world.
"The referees were on me to change uniforms, telling me they wouldn't let me
play if I had that patch on...to their credit, Bill and Arron were there to
argue my case the whole way. When the dispensation got run down by one of
Tony's office crew, it held up the start of the game while the officials
looked it over, Toronto's coaches looked it over. It was like they thought I
was wearing a gang symbol or something, but in the end, it was just making
sure that Chuck was remembered.
Allowed to play, the game started ten minutes late and was won 95-94 in the
closing seconds with a three point shot from Bell that hit nothing but net.
Toronto's Walt Jackson was unable to get the last shot off with 1.2 seconds
on the clock, and Bell finished with 15 points on the night.
Additional Notes:
Chuck Murphy's widow has been given complimentary front row tickets by Seoul
to attend their matchup in Salt Lake City next week. Hotel reservations and
seats have also been made for the widow Murphy and her son for the flight
following the game back to South Korea to the Seoul Nebraska game. She will
travel with the team on their chartered flight and will return stateside for
the Dragons' away game against division leader Oregon. The Fanatics were in
Seoul on the night that Murphy died, and prior to the game against Nebraska,
Tiziana Murphy will be presented with a Seoul jersey with her husband's name
and number. Jalen Bell will make the presentation.

What better way to reward your best performer than with a ticket out of
town?
An odd scenario that could only make sense in professional sports, where the
Seoul Dragons hosted their fan award ceremonies on Tuesday. The player voted
team MVP for the Seoul Dragons, guard/forward Eugene LaMaitre, was permitted
a few extra days before reporting to Salt Lake where he would join his new
team in the midst of a battle for first place in the Midwest Division.
LaMaitre, who had received 36% of the vote, edged out team co-captain Joe
Siebert (34%) in the first fan-voted awards ceremony for the fledgling
franchise. As part of their joint charity work with the "Just 100 Won"
foundation, the Dragons joined actors and performers in Daegu for a charity
week with a surprise for fans.
LaMaitre would not finish the season with the Dragons, instead being sent
with cash to Salt Lake in exchange for Jalen Bell and a pair of first round
draft picks. Bell will be suited up and ready to play in Friday's home game
against the Toronto Dinos.
"It's a tremendous honor," LaMaitre said, accepting the trophy before a
crowd of over five thousand people. "I wish I could stay and be part of the
coming seasons. I'm proud to say that I was part of this team in their first
season, and wish all the luck to Bill, Arron, and my former teammates for
the rest of the year and the seasons to come. I think South Korea is lucky
to have a team like this, one that we could well be facing in the playoffs a
couple of years down the line."
"I hate to see Gene go," head coach Bill Cash said. "He's been the glue
that's brought this group together for most of the year. I know Salt Lake
City is getting a legend, and Gene is getting a real shot at winning it all
this year."
"It felt like the right choice to make," general manager T.D. Swagger said
at a press conference following the event. "Jalen gets a chance to be the
top scoring option here and we get a test drive with one of the top free
agents for next season, and Gene gets put into the heart of a very deep and
very dangerous lineup. Both sides got what they really wanted in the end."
A charity auction included game worn jerseys and clinics with the athletes
as well as memorabilia and appearances with entertainment and musical
figures raised 770,000,000 Won (over $800,000) for the charity, most closely
associated with the March of Dimes. As a side note, rookies Eiji Yamaha and
Ajan Estay combined bids to win a lunch with singer Park Ji Yoon.
Other award winners for the team in fan voting:
Michael Huryta, Comeback of the Year
Sam Plummer, 6th Man of the Year
Brian Armstrong, Rookie of the Year

Deadline Deals
Part Four
Rumors of deals come flooding in as negotiations become fast and furious between WBA offices. General Managers remain near their phones, reading scouting reports and watching tapes to scout out the best of the available players on the market. By the time of publication, any number of moves can be made by any team-this focuses on what areas a team MAY focus on in the last few days before the deadline.
With forty-eight hours before the trade deadline elapses, we conclude our look at each team in the WBA with Omaha through Toronto, to see who is most likely to stay, who is likely to go, and a few possible destinations.
Omaha: five trades
A smart move to acquire Evans now in the push for the 8th seed in the west, and Sandler is more tried and tested on the floor than the young Luca McMillan. A team hunting for the chance to play upset might not yet be done with their playoff hopes, and the search for another scoring option may lead them to acquire Peter Parker for Ed Rhodes and a pair of second rounders. Rhodes, underutilized by Omaha, could be a bargain to re-sign for Alaska in the process. Should the team look toward next year, Ramiro Watts could make a playoff contender that much more solid with his 50%+ shooting. With one trade under their belt this week, the likelihood of another major deal is slim. Still, if there is an emergency in the coming days, watch for some of that cap space to be put to use to avert disaster.
Oregon: one trade
Barring an explosion that would make the Hindenberg look like the strike of a match, Oregon has clinched the division, crafted an all-star roster, and invested in the future with Ian Tilmon. What more could they ask for? Honestly, perhaps a little more cap space to come for the pending free agency, and with their big four locked up for years to come, Corey Moseley and Cole Bayo are the most likely to be moved if anyone is. Then again, Ian Tilmon’s successful campaign could warrant a higher payday for a lower cost than anyone on the team. No deals are imminent, but never say never. In the meantime, enjoy what has become a Western Conference Dynasty.
Paris: two trades
The second first place team to be reviewed, and the second team that is not likely to be making a move leading into the playoffs. This Paris team is a vast improvement over last year’s finals team-and that’s saying a great deal. The acquisition of anything outside of a draft pick would likely lead to the release of Watson or DeAngelo, and moreover the trade of a salaried player. With so much in place and so little to improve on, and a bonifide shot at the #1 overall pick next season, trades will only be made to give this team a solid future two or three years down the road. Don’t expect much here.
Rochester: three trades
Seven games over .500 and twelve and a half games out of first place, Rochester has the unenviable task of being a good team in a great division. Dave Williams is nearing the end of his contract, and the fans have to believe he would want to stay a bit more if he had a title legacy. With Davion Stahl underproducing, in high demand, and having racked up the frequent flier miles already, there’s potential for him to be moved one more time to give Williams a reason to stick around. Perhaps can be moved for Toronto’s Abdullah Chanda, or part of a deal for Ellis Law. They’ll be trolling the wires for the best options, and an upgrade to defense may be all they need.
Sacramento: four trades
Outside of the two year deal Oregon gave Ian Tilmon, one has to look at Jesse Sczygiel as one of the year’s best bargains, a castoff from Paris who’s filled a hole admirably. Injuries and misfortune have plagued them, but they stand a chance at making the seventh or eighth playoff seed in the West, and if any team could play spoiler, this is it. Will they make a play for a big name to improve their offense for that final run? Indications that Jalen Bell of Salt Lake is on the market, and could be a good acquisition for the right price. With only piecemeal coming back for free agency next year, don’t be surprised if John Van Horne is placed on the market if the team decides to call it a year.
Salt Lake City: one trade
A dogfight in the west for Salt Lake and Colorado to determine the Midwest Division champion. The difference between the third and fifth seed could come down to who has the staying power at the end of the season. Indications are that Salt Lake is looking to move Jalen Bell to improve what is already an incredible powerhouse lineup. Expect to hear discussions bandied about as Bell will hope to go somewhere that he can show off his skills as the number one scorer for a team, something that will guarantee a higher payday following free agency. The bench may see something of a purge to make sure the best candidates are available for the post-season.
Seoul: nine trades
The indication that both Siebert and LaMaitre are available has shown that the team is already thinking about next season. Someone will be moved from the team, almost certainly, though it is highly unlikely Daren Benson will be that player. Benson has improved as the heir to Gaiser’s legacy, and Brody Liang has proven difficult to release as he just keeps showing why he’s been a worthwhile addition. With Rojas headed for free agency and a pair of aging leaders, it’s hard to imagine Seoul not pushing to make a trade to start rebuilding next year. Twenty wins is considered to be a successful first season for an expansion franchise, and they’ve made that goal. Time to look to next season, and make that one last move if they can.
Toronto: seven trades
A blockbuster deal bringing young point guard wiz Jervan Timmons to Toronto has made the team that much more dangerous. Toronto is likely going to take a close look at an upgrade over Remi Jeay, who has the lowest shooting percentage of any starter. Timmons will need at least one more person to pass to in order to give Toronto the chance to play spoiler. Coomas Neetar could be had if someone was willing to take Jeay in turn-the potential acquisition of Art Campbell from New York would solidify the offence and allow Morfield and London to cover the shooting guard position without muchmore potential cost than Quade Nash and Hans Bryson.
April 13th, 20006
Deadline Deals
Part Three
With only a few days remaining, a major deal has occured wherein Brandon Sadler and Dontae Evans have been traded from Cincinnati to Omaha for a package including four draft picks, Angelo Bacchi, and Luca McMillan. Omaha acquires both a solid point guard and a very good power forward at what appears to be a heavy price. More on this to come.
With this final week before the trade deadline now upon us, we are halfway through our look at the 30 teams in the WBA, and today, we'll cover teams L-N to see who is most likely to stay, who is likely to go, and a few possible destinations.
Las Vegas: four trades
Ah, Las Vegas. 20-37 in their first season, and only five games out of a playoff spot in the top heavy Western conference, but showing only the most minimal interest in making it that far. A lot of cash for free agents next year, and only one big contract at this time (Otto Hameleers) leads one to believe that Vegas will not be making any further deals unless Hameleers or Rice fetches a good payoff. Vegas did not get what they had hoped this season, and the end result will be an almost full reset for next year. Vegas goes into free agency with one of the league’s worst records, a 25% handicap, but more money than most teams to find the players that they want. It is not impossible to imagine them fielding their rookies as starters for the rest of the season solely to get them more playing time and build on their experience for next season.
London: two trades
A team capable not only of adding salary, but also of making the playoffs this season given a few good breaks, the most valuable assets for them on the market are short term players like Jeremy Aarons and Jeff Sandbeck. Given Alaska’s willingness to part with Peter Parker for a bargain price, London may pick up a big part of their future lineup for the sake of cash relief and a draft pick or two. This is a team in need of a higher percentage shooter, and a player like Alaska’s Parker would be an excellent acquisition. The cap space they have saved will likely go to re-signing offensive leader Evelio Nunez in the offseason, given the bargain he proved to be this year. Sergei Danilov will not be moved barring an overwhelming deal, but that won’t stop a few teams from inquiring, given that his salary is manageable and his talent is still evident.
Long Island: Ten Trades
Over the cap and out of options, Long Island will watch the waiver wire to fill the few holes that exist in their lineup. A young big man, such as Salt Lake City’s Chris Rose, could likely be had for a waiver claim and would be an excellent investment to develop over time if he played well the rest of the year. Watch for the offseason, as they will not likely be re-signing Doherty, and will instead look at free agents to be like John Gaiser. Doherty might not last the season, if the right name is available as a FA. McCarthy, Doherty, and Gorman amount to almost eighteen million dollars set to come off the books as free agency promises to carry some big name players looking for a concrete winner. As such, Long Island will keep an eye open for the best players who can be used to fill out the rest of this season before diving at the opportunity to sign the missing pieces once the playoffs are done.
Mexico City: two trades
A team that is over the cap, next seasonbrings with it five expiring contracts, two first round picks, and a second round choice. It’s unlikely that John Gaiser will be re-signed, and Pete Merritt and the current coach have not seen eye to eye, leading one to imagine fifteen million dollars used to fill two spots after the draft. It’s possible that underrated Odibe King, Gaiser, and one of those draft picks could lead to a big score like Nebraska’s Tom Perkins, who has indicated a willingness to sign for much less next season. Mexico City is in dire need of sharpshooters, and it’s likely that they will simply wait until the offseason, unless the underachieving Peter Parker can be had for a bargain price.
Miami: No trades
Lingering on the edge of average, Miami’s numbers are comparable to their opponents’ in most categories. The team is good, but lacks the nudge that could lead them to be great. In a season where they have not only been quiet, but downright cryptic about their intentions, a major deal could easily shock and awe the average WBA fan into watching them again. Fatafehi is a premiere presence as a rebounder, and his high salary will scare most teams away. Despite that, there is a chance that Fatafehi may end up in London as part of a deal for Sergei Danilov, or in Nebraska to replace Tom Perkins. Expect Miami to remain silent until the deadline, when they will do their best to surprise the casual fan.
Nebraska: Four trades
It takes a certain kind of courage to rebuild your team in those last few moments before the deadline, and Nebraska has proven themselves to be among the most courageous teams in the WBA. The blockbuster deal with Toronto provided them Magic Toby and Simeon Hill, whose offensive and rebounding presence will make them a dangerous opponent to face. The team has lost a step, giving up young passing whiz Jervan Timmons for Umberto DiTullio, perennially forgotten when the time comes to look at the best point guards in the league. Nebraska is gearing up for the playoff run, and one could expect them to look for a scoring presence off the bench. A team that could easily look to a Kumanchik in the end.
\New York: two trades
Certain not to advance to the playoffs this year, the team that has a three contracts coming off the books that could be of interest, particularly to teams fighting to make that final run to the playoffs without incurring a heavy cost for the future. Center Charles Cushman is likely the most tempting of these targets, someone that Toronto has looked at closely recently. A move to the West Coast is certainly possible, as is the potential for Art Campbell, a level-headed and clever small forward, to depart for Las Vegas in exchange for a second round pick and Kaniel Hobbs. Cristobal Dasher, on the other hand, has the most potential to make an impact wherever he goes, and a Cress and Costantini for Dasher and Lee mega-deal is not a total impossibility. Watch to see if New York keeps the money, or moves to set some pieces for next season.

WBA Midseason Playoff Predictions
Well, the All-Star break is just past and the trade deadline nears. Teams are locking down for the stretch run hoping that they will make it into the WBA playoffs. Several teams are basically a lock at midseason to make it, but where will the teams end up? I'll do my best to lay out where I think the teams will end up and how the playoffs may shape up.
RD 1 Western Conference
1) Oregon
8) Sacramento
This may seem like a shocker, but I think Oregon will overtake Cancun as the top seed mainly because of the divisions they are in. Oregon is in the weakest division in the WBA and they'll use that to their advantage while Cancun seems to be in a very competitive division. Sacramento has some talent on their squad that I think they haven't used to full potential yet. Van Horne and Sheth (when healthy) plus Mark Miller is a great trio. This team is capable of great things, but I think they'll settle for an 8 seed. Now when these two teams start going at it I think there is an advantage to Oregon because they play such great defense while Sacramento really relies on an offensive style of basketball. Oregon takes it 3-1.
4) Capetown
5) Budapest
Talk about two teams that are all business. Neither will wow fans with finesse play, but they do the fundamentals of the game so well that they win all the time. Budapest has long been known as a defensive machine and that continues. Cress is a force inside and he really pushes this team. Capetown has emerged as a dark horse contender every year. They always seem to be on the verge of greatness, but need that one piece to push them over the edge. I give them this series though as I think their offense will be too much for Budapest to handle. Capetown 3-1.
2) Cancun
7) Nebraska
The only surprising thing about Cancun is that they aren't the top seed here. All the big names are back and I believe they are actually the best team in the West. Any team with Parker Mason leading it is a contender, not to mention Kent Mercer and Paul Carroll. Nebraska is a team that is still looking for its' new direction. I think that with their recent moves they will make it to the playoffs once again and be a 7 seed, but even with their new look I don't think they are any match for Cancun. Cancun wins 3-0.
3) SLC
6) Colorado
This will be an interesting series for sure. SLC is not used to being a favorite in a big series like this. They have a lot of talent, but it is the same players they have had in every other season. So where were the wins then? I think this team is playing great ball and they have really matured as a team this year. Colorado on the other hand has a history recently of losing when they are the favorites, so postseason success is foreign to the guys on the squad now. A solid outing here could really mature them fast. This series will be the best in the first round going 3-2 to SLC.
RD 1 Eastern Conference
1) Brooklyn
8) London
Brooklyn has really blown away the competition this year. All of their young players seem to be developing nicely and advancing their careers with some big wins. Jefferson, Miles, Herbert, and of course Strom have all played exceptionally well this year. It's a testament to the training program in place in Brooklyn that all these players can grow up there. I really feel that when it comes down to it, Brooklyn may be the best team in the league IF they can control the turnovers. London is just completely overwhelmed here. The East is 7 deep and London will be the “lucky” winner of the 8 seed in my opinion because they play in such a weak division. This is a big step for London to get back to the playoffs. A few seasons back they started a major rebuilding project that is still continuing. Brooklyn 3-0.
4) Long Island
5) Albacete
Long Island has a major force at every position, but their main weapon is still former MVP Wayne Taylor. Taylor has had an off year since being dealt from his old franchise Nebraska, but you can still see glimpses of stardom from him. I think that once the playoffs hit Long Island needs to make sure to get him the ball as much as possible and he is still capable of carrying a team through the playoffs. Albacete goes how Harry Jarvis goes. They have other weapons like youngster Juwan Bixby, but in the end if you shut down team leader Jarvis you're going to beat these guys. Jarvis is aging and Albacete may just have this one more run with him as their go to guy before they need to find another man. That will inspire them, but Taylor is too much, Long Island 3-1.
2) Paris
7) Rochester
A very interesting series here. Paris brings in one of the games most dominant players in Jay Vasquez while Rochester counters with scoring leader Dave Williams. To me Paris is a one man show. They were actually better over the past few seasons, but after making some deals I feel they have weakened themselves. Rochester is a team that I see as having a very solid starting 5. Van Brandt and Phelan will be the difference to me and I see Rochester winning the series 3-2 in the upset.
3) Charlotte
6) Toronto
Well, lucky for Charlotte they play in a very poor division. A third seed is a gift for them and it gives them home court in the first round. This is a team with a lot of talent in players like Schulz, Whalen, and Blackstone, but these are also journeyman players. Toronto just struck a deal that brought them an amazing backcourt tandem in Brandon Morfeld and Jervan Timmons. While I believe that their lack of a dominant Center will be a problem for them in the playoffs this is about the only team that doesn't have a C capable of taking advantage of that so I predict Toronto 3-2.
Western Conference RD 2
Oregon vs. Capetown Oregon 4-2.
Cancun vs. SLC Cancun 4-2.
Eastern Conference RD 2
Brooklyn vs. Long Island Brooklyn 4-1.
Rochester vs. Toronto Rochester 4-2.
Western Finals
Oregon vs. Cancun Cancun 4-1.
Brooklyn vs. Rochester Brooklyn 4-3.
Championship
Brooklyn vs. Cancun
What a classic match-up this would be.
I say Cancun 4-2 as Brooklyn's turnover issues come back to haunt them finally.

Deadline Deals
Part Two
Every season brings with it a bevy of discussion and speculation regarding playoff runs, teams looking to rebuild, and those who are simply trying to slash payroll for free agency in the hope of re-signing players they want to keep, or improving themselves with players from other organizations. Even teams over the trade cap will be watching the rest of the WBA closely, to see which names end up on the waiver wire, and which players are earmarked for free agency for teams looking to slash payroll for next season. With this final week before the trade deadline now upon us, a quick look at the 30 teams in the WBA will tell us who is most likely to stay, who is likely to go, and a few possible destinations for the jet set. Today, we'll cover teams C-G.
Cancun: three trades
Another first place team, only slightly ahead of their chief rival Capetown in the World Division. Cancun has no reason to make major moves at this point save perhaps to increase their defensive pressure on opponents, and perhaps a shooting upgrade over Parker Mason, whose 40.4% shooting is the lowest among all five starters. Again, not a weakness, and barely even a chip in the armor considering what he adds in rebounds, assists, and steals. If any deals are to be made, expect Ryan Cuevas to be moved to a rebuilding team willing to invest to resign a better than average passer. Salt Lake City may have an interest in Jim Koons, but his contract will likely expire with him still playing for Mexico.
Capetown: five trades
Capetown has been downright scary in their pursuit of the World Division title, and have been involved in the chase of the year. Oshodi Bombata has shot an electrifying 57% from the floor and the only “hole” is that opponents are better at the free throw line. It’s not likely that Capetown will make any deals at the deadline, despite the potential to upgrade from Jim Donnelly as the backup small forward. If any deals are to be made, expect Capetown to package a future pick for something to use in the coming season, or to move Donnelly with a second round pick for the expiring contract for Gabon’s Marty Williams-a deal that will give them a little extra cash to re-sign the effective Mitchel Gallagher. Don’t expect any big deals at the deadline.
Charlotte: six trades
Ten games ahead of their closest competition, Charlotte’s triangle offense serves them well, with Coleman, Spagnoli, and Blackstone taking the lead for the team with Callaway, McCree, and Schulz contributing the most from the bench. An expiring contract like Jimmy Whalen’s is the most useful item that Charlotte can move to acquire a big fourth. Teams will keep listening for openings for the big three, but if Whalen is offered up, expect another expiring contract to come back to allow Charlotte at least four million going into free agency. Whalen to London for Jeff Sandbeck may look odd on the surface, but Sandbeck has underperformed since he was acquired from Seoul, and remains a bargain contract at the cost of someone expected to be available on the free agent market next year regardless.
Cincinnati: one trade
Last place in the Atlantic Division doesn’t bode well for a team at the trade deadline, especially when you have major leads over your opponents in almost every category and still have a 2-27 record away from home. What this amounts to is a search for the pieces that will work best for next season. Easily the most alluring on the market would be Brooklyn’s Bert Haug, but it’s a deal that hinges on him accepting a contract extension. Raheem Qualls and Timi Rambuka are easily coveted as young, quality prospects, but Jerry Kumanchik could yield some heavy returns, given the brevity of his contract and what he has accomplished this season. Sacramento, Nebraska, and Gabon are all fighting for the 8 slot in the west, with Omaha and Vegas not far behind. There’s a key market for him beyond his expiring contract, and the right gamble would mean one of those teams making the playoffs at what could be a very reasonable price.
Colorado: five trades
It’s a lock that Colorado will make the playoffs, and are still capable of overtaking Salt Lake for the Division title. That being said, the only major category where they could use improvement over being a truly terrifyingly dominant team is rebounding. Their opponents score nearly one hundred points a game in spite of several dominant rebounders of note in their starting lineup. Some insurance will help them off the bench, and a Dragunas/Boyer for Berger/Oblongata swap with Mexico City is likely the most involved move that Colorado will make before the deadline. The team is just that damn good.
Frankfurt: three trades
A good team in need of fewer fouls and better rebounding from its players, Frankfurt has the most outside of chances to contend this year. As such, the decision is theirs whether they will push forward this season or build for next year. Mike Bennett will likely draw a lot of interest if they do decide to call it a season from a Western Division team. If they decide to push for the playoffs themselves, a rebounder off the bench like Cancun’s Al Zarra or Andorra’s Quenten Christiansen could be had cheaply and would contribute a lot to the team’s chances. Expect the team to at least look if Jerry Kumanchik is available.
Gabon: three trades
Number seven by a thread, the “sacrificial victim” to Oregon in the first round of the playoffs, Gabon is a team that is one good scorer away from gaining dominance. The team is too aggressive on the floor, and that costs them victories in the end. They are playing solid enough basketball to continue competing, but Sims and Tango will be at their most useful moved as expiring contracts to bring in a bigger name player. A.J. Schulz may prove to be a good fit if the team needs an offensive spurt off the bench, but it could prove costly in the end. Gabon will likely stay the course and avoid any further deals this season, content with an early playoff exit.

Deadline Deals
Part One
Today, we'll cover A-B.
Alaska: Seven trades
Some conjecture has occurred as to whether or not a major deal with Las Vegas for recently acquired Isaac Rice. Rice would be a good fit in with a team looking to get a little cash back next year, but one would suspect only minor deals to come following the Oregon blockbuster. A team in need of some financial relief, one has to wonder if Cincinnatti’s Abegunda Abasi would welcome a trip to colder climes in exchange for financial freedom next season. Adding $7.5 million to their cap would give them a lot to work with in free agency next year. Teams may like the look of guard Bohuslav Hruska, who passes with some skill. Donavan Jones will likely draw some interest as a solid PF/C in a setting like Toronto or London.
Albacete: Seven trades
A team that is, on the whole, one of the most balanced in the WBA, and making a serious challenge to Paris for first place in the Euro Division, they are well stocked at every position and fully capable of making it through the season without any additional moves. The most likely scenario for a player to be moved would be to add another player capable of handling the guard positions, more than likely a youngster to develop on their own. Frankfurt’s Steve Carter, for example. Odds of seeing a last minute deal from Albacete are slim, but expect a few nibbles from other teams for Matt Archer and Harry Jarvis.
Andorra: Six trades
Andorra has the unenviable position of fielding one of the top players in the league (Devonta Corrigan) on a last place roster. The team has not suffered this season for lack of offense, but rather, a defense that has given up over a hundred points a game on average. This, while scoring 99 points a game over the course of the season is no small feat. The team is aggressive on the floor, tracking down rebounds and showing more than a fair amount of offense, but not excelling in stripping other teams of the ball in close contests. The question of when Corrigan will be moved has to be asked, and with his contract expiring next year, it’s likely that optimum value would be achieved by moving him now. In turn, Ellis Law (averaging fifteen points a game in under 30 minutes per) would be a very alluring piece to a deal for someone like London’s Sergei Danilov, who would provide an improved defense in the front court. Look for this team to at least discuss Corrigan, with even odds of him being moved this year.
Arkansas: ten trades (cap)
A team that will be watching the waiver wire closely. Adam Virgil is not long for the team, and Buck Jones and Gary Agey both have the upside that might make the team release Bill Andrews early to open two slots. Cashwise, it doesn’t make sense prior to the deadline, but one suspects that Wu Dian-Fan will not be given an extension this year either-bringing the total that much closer. Watch to see if they upgrade based on players released, as they have the time to experiment this season to find the best fit for next year.
Baltimore: one trade
Second place in a division where only the first place team moves on, seven games under .500, and still fighting for the eighth playoff spot in the east, Baltimore is in need of a shot of adrenaline. Rhodes, Valente, and Tawaraya are three names that will doubtless draw interest, but only the last is potentially to be moved. Fonzarelli’s lackluster year will not lead to him being moved...yet. A team with money to spare. Scott Currie and Frank Ryan might be packaged together with a 2nd round pick to bring Luke Benner and Jerry Sims from Gabon, but Anson Valente will be the player most people will be inquiring about. Brooklyn’s Bert Haug might also be a solid fit, if Baltimore can offer enough.
Boston: three trades
A team seeking more to develop from within than make a move this year, one would still suspect Boston looks long and hard at what it takes to re-sign at least one of their departing free agents, likely Al Levy. With Lang holding firmly onto the center position, George Faup might prove an attractive player to a team with expiring contracts to spare, Charlotte may part with Jimmy Whalen and a draft pick to acquire a developing center, and Boston can delve into the free agent market with a little more cash. A solid shooter with an inexpensive contract, like Cincinatti’s Justice Grant would also be a boon to a team whose only real weakness is a lack of accuracy. Teams will look long and hard at Ajani Valentine, but Boston will be hoping to move Pynn more than any other player.
Brooklyn: two trades
Leading their division by an astonishing ten and a half games, Brooklyn has the winning lineup in the Northeast Division. They are strong from top to bottom, and seem to require almost nothing in the long run. If that were so, however, Bert Haug would have been signed to a longer term deal during free agency, given what he has contributed on a part time basis. His value has never been so high, and for a team in need of virtually nothing at this time, it’s difficult to envision them making any major moves near the deadline. It’s possible, given his lackluster shooting percentage on a team renowned for hitting basket after basket, that the Al Herbert experiment at center may be coming to an end, but he’s young and talented with only room to grow. It’s more likely that Paul Wilson, the rebounding wizard at power forward, could be moved with Yuriy Zakharov for a player like Michael Huryta of Seoul (who has surprised many with his offensive growth this season) or Isaac Rice of Las Vegas to fill a hole and decrease the team salary to give the rage a better chance at re-signing Omar Jefferson, likely the most coveted player of the pending free agency period. Watch for Haug to be moved potentially for draft picks to reach the same end.
Budapest: three trades
Thirty-eight wins and sixteen losses, and lodged firmly in third place, Budapest would play Capetown in the playoffs if the season ended today. An extended division rivalry that brings the focus back to the most basic aspect of the game: shooting more baskets than your opponents. A 41.4% shooting percentage has not prevented this team from being 22 games over .500, but the team is in dire need of some bench support capable of hitting the shots when the time comes. Bobby Cress has been atrocious following the signing of his seven year, $101 million dollar contract in the offseason, going from shooting over 52% to 38%, a career low. It is no surprise that Budapest would be looking to move his contract and acquire a center who fits into their system a little better. London has been rumored to be interested in re-acquiring Cress, but Budapest would have to both offset his contract and add an additional player to get something equitable in return. New York’s Charles Cushman, whose contract expires at year’s end, is a stopgap style acquisition who has been used sparingly this season and could possibly be had for the comparably priced tandem of Gill and Costantini, plus a 2nd round pick. Watch to see if Cress is placed up for trade-if so, London is one of a few teams who could likely work a deal for him.

Jackson Once Again Shines Among The Stars at All Star Weekend.
Johnny"Hoops"Hamilton
Walt Jackson has always been in the spotlight and all star weekend is all about the spotlight. Jackson would be starting in his first all star game and did not disappoint tying for the lead in team scoring for the eastern conference team with 15. Jackson also finally claimed the 3 point shooting title in his third attempt. He was a finalist in his rookie year in both the 3 pt shootout and the slam dunk contest falling short in both. But despite a so performance in the final round it was enough to get the win and claim the 3 pt shooting crown. All this in a year with his team a true playoff contender in the East. It has been a big year for Walt Jackson and maybe a bigger year for the franchise that he is the face of. Maybe all of this can explain a sub par performance in the first game back after the all star break where Jackson only scored 4 points but his team picked up the slack as the Dinos beat division leaders in the west Salt Lake.
Jackson is his 3rd year is really starting to show that he is part of the WBA elite. Dinos rise from league bottom feeder and Walt's success have gone hand and hand. It is clear how far the Dinos go is directly linked to Walt Jackson. Other players have better numbers but Walt Jackson may be the true definition of M. V.P. I mean could you imagine how bad this team would be without Jackson? It's not to say the Dinos not have some nice players beyond Jackson but without him they would struggle to score. If Jackson has an of night the Dinos usually lose and lose badly. Which makes the win over Salt Lake all the sweeter.
Coach Armstrong had this to say on his All Star Player:
Armstrong: Walt's been a great player from day one. He has natural God given talent. However he has always been willing to listen and try to improve. Wins mean more to him than his personal stat line. I understand that he may come off sometimes in the media as a cocky kid but it's just his way to focus on doing his best. I don't always like it when he does go off in the media but with maturity he will learn that you don't have to say it just go do it and others will say it for you. I've told him that this year and I think it's starting to sink in. He is a joy to coach though and I think when all is said and done has hall of fame type talent. He makes a Joe bag of donuts coach like me look very smart most nights.
Jackson makes his teammates better as well. You need look no further than Tyler Durden. The veteran is having his best season in years. He is glad he came back to the franchise he was with back in it's pre Toronto days. Durden seemed happy with his choice when he talked with us:
Tyler Durden: It's great being here. This team makes me feel young and energizes me. Walt is one of the greatest guys I've had a chance to play with in my time in the league. He can score he can rebound and he doesn't hog it ether he can drop dimes like a pg. When I'm old and gray in my rocking chair after my days in WBA are done, I can say I played with that kid when he was starting out. He's going be something special you can just see it when you get a chance to be around him everyday.
The high praise is well deserved and if the Dinos go anywhere it will be in large part to what #44 Walt Jackson was done. Walt seemed to be less excited than you might expect after all his all star weekend success. Here is what he had to say prior to the game vs. Salt Lake:
Jackson: I'm happy with how the weekend went. I mean all star weekend has always been big to me. However we are in a heck of a dogfight right now and we need to focus on that as a team. Any individual awards or praise I get is all good but something I'll think about after the season. Right now we need to go out and play hard and get some W's. We have come a long way this year and I think we close to being a contender. But we have Brooklyn, Long Island,Rochester and Albacete all to battle. We are the new kid on the block as far as playoff contention goes. I think that missing out last year on the playoffs taught my team and I,what it takes to be a winner. We are no fluke and I think anyone that thought that or thinks that will get the proof were not as we go down the stretch. The playoffs is something I want to experience, playing with everything on the line. I crave that excitement and drama more than anything.
Well Jackson should get all of that and more in the push to the playoffs as on of the closest battles in league history hits the stretch run. This could be a moment that will define Jackson and the Dino Organization with what happens in the next 30 games. It's going to be very exciting to watch as we close in on the trade deadline to see what teams will do to try and gain the upper hand for the stretch run. The say no one nowadays is untradeable but Walt Jackson is as close as you can get. The future looks bright for Walt and the Dinos but that could change very fast, given how close everyone sits in standings. Living on the edge and it seems Jackson wouldn't have it any other way!!!

contest. Valentine had a terific performance barely
edging Mason out ofthe next round. But, the major honors
go to John Devine for his near perfect performance with
27 points.

After back to back huge performances John Devine slipped
and it cost him. Devine's stumble allowed Jackson to be

to compete.

really struggled. Filipovic did the unthinkable by missing
his last six shots and leaving the door wide open for
Jackson.
